Erupting Volcano Cake &
Prehistoric Birthday Party
by Martha Matthews
Erupting
Volcano Cake
Ingredients and Supplies
One Chocolate Fudge Cake mix
One can of Chocolate Fudge Frosting.
One 2 quart Batter Bowl from Pampered Chef (or the same by Anchor
Hocking).
2 small tubes of red gel icing
1 small tube of orange gel icing
Several, two or three inch tall plastic dinosaurs
1 cup shredded, sweetened coconut tossed with 4 to 5 drops of green food
coloring
10 Oreo cookies broken up into small pieces to look like dirt
One cake plate
One platter or plate larger than the cake plate
One juice glass approximately 3 inches high by 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
One small box of red colored Jell-O (any flavor will do)
One small bottle of lemon juice
1 tablespoon of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
Directions
1. Make the cake according to the directions on the box. Bake for 1 hour
and 10 to fifteen minutes or until a cake tested comes out clean. Cool
for 15 minutes and invert onto a rack to cool for three hours. Place on
the cake plate.
2. Hull out the middle of the cake to accommodate the drinking glass.
Place the glass down in the hole so that it is flush with the top of the
cake. Frost the side of the cake in a vertical fashion to make it look
like the sides of a volcano.
3. Place the crushed Oreos around the bottom of the cake to look like
dirt. Sprinkle the shredded green coconut on top of that to simulate
grass.
4 Place the dinosaurs around the bottom of the cake.
5. Heat the red gel icing in a microwave safe container for 1 minute.
Drizzle it down the sides of the cake to simulate lava. Repeat the same
with the orange gel icing.
6. Place candles on the top edge of the cake. Make the Jell-O according
to the package directions. Let cool 15 minutes. When Jell-O is still
warm (not hot), fill juice glass 1/2 full with the warm Jell-o. Pour in
enough lemon juice so that the glass is almost full or about 1/2" from
the top. Light the candles and sing “Happy Birthday”.
7. When ready, put 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda into the glass
with the Jell-o/lemon mixture and briefly stir (1-2 seconds). Then stand
back and watch the “lava” flow over the side of the cake. Cut the cake
and enjoy!
Make sure you have another tray or larger plate under the cake plate as
the mixture will flow past the cake plate.
Frozen Dino Eggs
Ingredients
One gallon of vanilla ice cream
One cup cake baking cup for each serving
Colored sugar sprinkles in green and purple
Directions
Place cup cake baking cups in a cup cake baking tin. Scoop one to two
scoops of ice cream into each cup. Freeze for one hour. Remove and top
with sugar sprinkles. Keep frozen until the party.
Red Lava Punch

2 small packages of red Jell-O (any flavor)
4 cups boiling water
4 cups cold water
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 large can of unsweetened pineapple juice
2 - 2 liter bottles of ginger ale
Directions
Empty the Jell-O into large mixing bowl. Add boiling water and mix until
dissolved. Add sugar & mix until dissolved. Add cold water, lemon juice,
pineapple juice. Mix well. Pour liquid into two freezer safe containers
(such as clean, empty milk jugs). Allow punch to freeze (may take up to
two days to freeze solid).
Take the punch out of the freezer and allow to thaw approximately one
hour before serving time. Mix 1 container of punch with one 2 liter
bottle of ginger ale. The punch will be at "slushy" stage.
