An Introduction To Greenhouses

By Amanda Bregman

The conventional experience of the farmers and gardeners talks about the early maturity of the fruits which are nurtured on the sunny side and protected parts of the slope. This concern has literally paved the way to the birth of the modern versions of greenhouses.

The roots of today’s greenhouses can be very well traced back to the practice in England wherein the grapevines were grown in the garden walls which received more than enough sunlight. There were those in England who once thought of inclining the garden walls in a way that the sun rays will have to directly land on the grapevines. After which, they discovered that the leaves of the fruits needed to be shun away from the harsh frosty breezes and ice fall so they conceptualized on the building of the glass coverings around the plants.

Moreover, when they observed that the plants were getting insufficient amount of sunlight, they resorted to placing flues at the back of the garden walls in order to endow some additional heat. After several years, the early greenhouses were erected with the materials such as glasses that were propped up by some beams made out of metal and wood.

The primary purpose of creating greenhouses was to the growing of the flowers which were out of the season. Naturally, when it was not the proper time to nurture some flowers, the farmers needed to think of valuable ways to keep up with their production state. These modern times, however, the greenhouses have been equipped with a lot other functions.

With the glass-covered greenhouses, the conditions brought about by the summer season can be accessed all year round especially during the winter months. There is the application of additional source of heat which is supposed to be given off by the sun itself because the plants need this factor for survival.

The smaller greenhouses are usually employed with the heat supported by hot water whereas the bigger ones are basically worked out with a steam which henceforth proves to be a lot practical and economical. Alongside with the heating factor, ventilation is another important element to look into. There must be the proper regulation of the supply of air inside the greenhouses so that humidity and temperature will be controlled. Gardeners know for certain that an abrupt change in either of the two may bring a grave effect on the plants.

Greenhouses is our way to control & change the nature. We can have any kind of fruits, vegetables or flowers that we like during all the seasons of the year, remember that all of this happen just because all the farmers and the gardeners that invent and improve the Greenhouses during all this years.
