12 Tips for a Cleaner Living and
Family Room
by Martha Matthews
1. Declutter theses rooms first. Throw out anything broken or worn out.
Take misplaced items back to where they belong. Donate things that you
can’t use to a worthy organization.
2. Empty out the magazine rack and only keep the most current month’s
issues. Donate the rest to your local library or recycle them.
3. Make a rule that before everyone goes to bed, each person is to pick
up their stuff and put it away. This is a great opportunity to teach
small children the habit of “clean up time”. Help them by showing them
how to put their toys away in a container that you will carry back to
their room.
4. Put CDs in a CD holder and video tapes in narrow video tape boxes.
Store these containers on a shelf under the T.V. or in a decorative
basket under a side table. Don’t forget to label the tops of each video
so you can find a movie when you want to watch it.
5. Recycle old newspapers. Keep only today’s paper.
6. Keep the top of your coffee table clear. Don’t have more than two to
three items on the top. If you have small children, keep the top clear
for safety.
7. Take down your blinds and clean them. Lay them on the lawn and spray
them down with the hose. Turn them over and spray them down on the other
side. Hang them over the fence to dry. If they are not dirty enough for
a washing, just give them a good dusting by running a lint-free cloth
over both sides.
8. Put your remote controls and the T.V. Guide in a small decorative
basket designated for that purpose only. You’ll always know where to
find them.
9. Remove any cob webs on the ceiling. Don’t forget the corners.
10. Vacuum the couch using your small brush attachment. Don’t forget
under the cushions.
11. Dust the furniture. Don’t forget those out of the way places like
the tops of pictures and mirrors, the legs of furniture, tops of books,
window sills, and the tops of door ways.
12. Clean the light fixtures if needed.
