5 Tips for Buying Fabric
by Mary Wilkins
There is not one of us that needs to be told how to buy fabric. We all
have the knack but you can run into problems when it comes to yardage or
colors. Here's a couple of tips I've collected from experience and
assorted disasters.
1. Check your fiber content, if there is no tag, ask the clerk. If they
don't know, beware, you are on your own.
2. Always buy a little more fabric than you need. A lot of fabric prints
are discontinued by stores once they have sold out of them. Buying a
little more than you need might save you disappointment.
3. Have you ever taken a fabric home and found it is a totally different
color than what you saw in the fabric store. Hold your fabric up to a
window for a true sense of the colors. You need the natural light to
judge properly.
4. Always check for flaws before the clerk cut into the fabric. This is
particularly true of knits.
5. If you can, buy batting by the yard instead of pre-packaged. It is
much more economical.
