What You Need To Do In Your Garden For April

by Paul A Richards

As winter comes to an end it is time for us all to get out and prepare our outside space for the summer. It is imperative that the tips outlined below are given serious consideration. You will reap the benefits by putting in the work now.

Dead Heading - Remove all faded flowers from your daffodils, pansies and violas. Let you daffodils die back naturally so they put new energy back into the bulbs. Next year they will produce a better display.

Prune Back Forsythia - Once it has finished flowering. You can also prune and trim; Spiraea, Buddleia, Dogwoods, Hardy Fuchsias, Cotoneasters, Potentilla, Mahonia and Japonica.

Divide Hostas and Snowdrops - Dig up and divide large clumps of Hostas. Snowdrops can be divided and re-planted ready for next spring.

What to Plant - This month plant biennials, Sweet Peas, Dahlia Tubers and Penstemons.

Damaged Foliage - Remove any yellowing or damaged foliage from plants to prevent disease.

Weed Control - Hand dig out weeds from your borders before they get out of control! To suppress weeds add mulch to your borders or better still plant lots of ground cover plants.

Prune Jasminum - Prune Jasminum Nudiflorum and Ribes (flowering currant) after the flowers have faded.

Roses - Cut last year's stems back by about half.

Sowing Seeds - Sow half-hardy annual summer bedding plants.

Summer Hanging Baskets - Start making up your baskets in the greenhouse.

Stake Your Plants - Plants that will grow tall this spring and summer need staking now to prevent damage in windy weather. These will include Delphinium, Lupin, Fox Glove, Monks Hood and Oriental Poppies.
